A Hundred was a unit of local government between the parish and the county. The term originally referred to an area of 100 hides. A hide is the amount of land sufficient to support a family and hence one armed man.
Hundreds were a Wessex system of administration that was imposed on Cornwall when it came under Wessex control prior to 936. The first recorded use of the term "hundreds" was in the legal code of King Edmund 1, 939 to 946, but hundreds likely existed in Wessex before that date.
Since 1894, the hundreds have no administrative function.
